HRAPF’s Executive Director, mr. Adrian Jjuuko, was one of five finalists shortlisted for the annual European Union Human rights Defenders Award for 2017. The award is granted by the EU and its Member States in Uganda, and Norway to recognise the achievements of Human Rights Defenders in Uganda.

For the past six years, an individual eligible for the EU Human Rights Defender Award is nominated by another individual or organisation. Human Rights organisations active in Uganda were invited to nominate candidates for the award. Candidates were assessed by a jury composed of human rights experts of different European Embassies and the EU Heads of Mission.

During the award ceremony, hosted on 26 May 2017 at the residence of H.E. Henk Jan Bakker, the Ambassador of the Netherlands to Uganda, Mr. Jjuuko, was recognised for his victory in the Equal Opportunities Commission case as well as his role in coordinating the legal challenge against the Anti-Homosexuality Act.

The award was received by Ms. Pamela Judith Angwech, the founder and Executive Director of Gulu Women’s Economic Development and Globalisation (GWED-G). Her organisation is the largest grass roots human rights organisation in the region, focusing on women and youth.

HRAPF wishes to congratulate ms. Angwech with this award. We are also grateful for the international recognition of HRAPF’s work.
